Mahendra Singh Dhoni, today, gave another reason for his team’s failure in the recently concluded Twenty20 world cup. And that was ‘limited mandate’. He said, “Like our Home Minister Mr. Chidambaram, I too have limited mandate of being captain of the side for just 40 overs. Compare this to 450 overs spread over five days in test cricket and even 100 overs within a day in ODIs. You will understand how significantly limited my mandate is”.
Relieved that it was not made the target by the Indian skipper, BCCI responded by assuring that it will look into the matter. “We will discuss this with ICC. We shall try to negotiate more overs in twenty20 cricket so that our team leader doesn’t feel stifled”.
Unexpectedly Railway Minister Mamata Bannerjee also reacted on the Indian team’s performance by laying the blame squarely on the viewers. “Like how the passengers were responsible for the stampede at the railway station, cricket viewing public is to be blamed for this defeat. It’s not easy to win world cups. In such a situation you can’t expect the team to win. Neither administration nor players can do anything about it. Its a problem with people’s expectations”, opined the railway minister.
Rightly dismissing all this as glib talk, citizen journalist and occasional cricket expert Hrishikesh was surprised by such late coverage of the T20 defeat by up and coming art house mindry.in.
