Simhendra, a 25 year old Bangalorean, was extremely disappointed that India could not win against England. Although this is an expected reaction from an Indian cricket fan after India failed to defend 338 runs and conceded a tie against England, the reason for Simhendra’s sadness was anything but expected. Simhendra, who inexplicably still nurses a colonial angst, was pretty peeved over the fact that India could not avenge England’s pre-1947 colonial rule of India. When told that this was not the first time India was playing against England in a world cup match after independence, Simhendra shot back saying, ‘I will protest this tie by resorting to civil disobedience and will not watch matches which feature England’. Lord Mountbatten, the last Governor General of India, was unavailable for comment as he was busy being dead for sometime now.
One of Mindry.in’s viewers, Avinash feels India could not do what Aamir Khan did in 2000 in the film Lagaan. Cinema-cricket expert Ranjit Masand bizarrely attributed this to the absence of good background score. Sharath of Mindry.in was angry about India’s inability to win the match and blamed ‘extremely bad governance’. Terming it as a failure of democracy, he demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister. The Karnataka Congress though blamed the BJP government in Karnataka for the team’s performance in Bangalore. “If we were not sure of ensuring the team’s victory, I don’t think the government should have accepted the proposal to shift the match to Bangalore from Kolkata. Now the city has earned the reputation of hosting a match that ended in a tie. This result reflects the government’s indecisiveness and will harm investor confidence”, said a senior leader who appeared to be from the Congress.
Meanwhile, citizen journalist Hrishikesh has called upon all sections of society including Simhendra to stop playing politics over a cricket match. ‘Ultimately cricket was the winner’, he said becoming the trillionth person to have repeated that cliché.
